About the editors

As three editors of ‘The Secret Balance of Champions’ we began our careers from different starting points, but with a common ambition to support elite athletes. After Margriet de Schutter ended her career as an elite short track speed skater, she founded the online platform for active & former elite athletes Extopsporter.nl in 2011 and  produced the award-winning documentary, ‘Going Deep for Vancouver’ about her own transition out of elite sport. Margriet is an experienced interviewer in elite sport, author of the book ‘Stoppen & Doorgaan’ (‘Stop & Continue’) and international motivational speaker. For this book 'The Secret Balance of Champions', she conducted and wrote down the interviews with 32 champions from various sports and cultures in order to provide revealing stories with very personal and unique insights.

After several seasons at the highest level in Dutch youth football, Gino Kerkhoffs became one of the most recognised orthopaedic surgeons within elite sport and currently leads at the Amsterdam University Medical Centers the largest academic orthopaedic surgery department in The Netherlands.

Vincent Gouttebarge joined FIFPRO (Football Players Worldwide) as Chief Medical Officer to overview the health and safety of professional footballers after being a player himself for several seasons in French and Dutch professional football. Vincent and Gino have worked together for several years at the Amsterdam University Medical Centers, where they conduct research that aims to deliver better medical support for active and former elite athletes.

Our common ambition to provide elite athletes with better support led to our alliance and objective to create The Secret Balance of Champions: Health Challenges in Elite Sport, a book in which elite athletes themselves are able to share their stories and experiences.
