Musculoskeletal Injuries

During both training and competition, elite athletes are highly exposed to intense and prolonged physical demands, as well as to high energetic demands (aerobic and anaerobic). These physical and energetic demands, in combination with insufficient time for recovery, might induce the occurrence and recurrence of musculoskeletal injuries. Because these injuries lead to absence from training or competition, it remains especially essential to invest time in their prevention. Therefore, preventive strategies and interventions have been developed and found efficacious in several sports and/or for specific injuries. This chapter in The Secret Balance of Champions focusses on the musculoskeletal injuries that elite athletes might face during their career, as well as on their prevention.
